(Mobile) bicycle workshop

Projects on the Tempelhofer Feld

A vocational qualification programme in bicycle technology at Tempelhofer Feld.

Since 2012, Taschengeldfirma e.V., a youth self-help association from the North Neukölln neighbourhood, has been organising the bike workshop Thf on Tempelhofer Feld. The vocational qualification offer in bicycle technology opens up access opportunities to jobs and training for young people who have a particularly hard time. Many of the participants in the workshop have moved to Berlin in the course of the EU expansion in recent years, they have fled from crisis areas, or they have simply dropped out of school here in Berlin. The participants are real experts at screwing and tinkering. Here on the field, they find a connection and can specifically deepen their skills. They can buy bicycles and refurbish them inexpensively, and there are no limits to their creativity when it comes to recycling. With the help of park visitors who are eager to communicate, language acquisition also takes place at a crash pace.

Self-conception

At the bicycle workshop, the door is open to all people ...

...anyone who would like to tinker with their bike themselves, needs practical tips or repair help, or is just good enough to share the sight of their beloved bike with others, as well as exchange a few words about reliable bike tyres and good coffee.

RadWerkstatt as a social meeting place and clock generator for creative action ...
The bike workshop is a popular meeting point for families from the neighbouring neighbourhoods, who work on bikes together with their children, eat the lunch they have brought with them and exchange news about the neighbourhood.

Furthermore, the RadWerkstatt organises an annual festival for local residents, families and children. At the festival, which has the character of an "open day", the project presents and informs about its work, freshly brewed tea is served and, as a highlight, upcycled bicycles from its own forge are lent out.

Since 2014, the bike workshop Thf has been cooperating with the energy seminar. This cooperation has resulted in the Cine2Ride - bicycle cinema on Tempelhofer Feld. On 1 July 2015, the bicycle cinema was presented to a large and enthusiastic public for the first time on the Oderstr project site. For more cinema screenings and further information on the concept, see here.

Together with another cooperation partner, KitRad e.V., the RadWerkstatt is currently planning the installation of a micro wind turbine (KWKA) on the Tempelhofer Feld. The CHP is to be set up on the Oderstr project site and will initially supply the Oderstr project network with ecological electricity. The Energy Seminar and its students (TU Berlin) will also take on tasks during the construction of the CHP. KitRad and the energy seminar will then work empirically with the wind turbine, while the RadWerkstatt ThF will use it as a demonstration object to inform park visitors and students from neighbouring schools about sustainable forms of energy and energy production. In consultation with the schools, outdoor workshops are also planned in this area.
